Another Hurricane, Another Chance for Insurance Companies

A picture of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina fromhrricanekatrina.comIt has been almost exactly 3 years since Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. The Federal and State governments were unresponsive at the start and highly ineffective in dealing with the aftermath. Tens of thousands of people lost everything. Tens of thousands of people cannot return to their homes. Tens of thousands have as much as given up that dream.

One of the reasons that they cannot return home is that the insurance companies have a policy you might call "The Three D's" - Deny, Delay, Deal.

  • Deny that the coverage exists
  • Delay payment through "legal" means if the Denial doesn't work
  • Make a Deal to pay as little as possible if the Delay tactics don't make the recipient give up.

Three years is a long time to wait for an insurance settlement, especially if it involves your home. Anderson Cooper on CNN did a show about insurance companies in 2007 where it came to light about the industries unwritten policy to take as long as possible to pay as little as possible.

Insurance is supposed to spread the liability of risk among many people with the insurer making a profit.

I am an Associate with PrePaid Legal Services and our attorneys in Louisiana started contacting our members as soon as it was known where Katrina would hit - roughly. They made sure that our members took all their vital papers, including the insurance policies, with them when they evacuated.

I am just hoping that the government does the right thing at the right time this time. I also hope that the government will hold the industry's feet to the fire to make them do the right thing. Either way a growing number of people are looking to PrePaid Legal to provide help in situations similar to these and ones of not such a devastating nature.

If you would like more information about what PrePaid Legal has to offer or the get a membership feel free to contact me through my website.

Anyway, my thoughts and prayers go out to those in Hurricane Dolly's path.
