The Socializing of America
October 16, 2008 by Curt Siters
What really gets me is that the Republicans, especially in this Presidential Election Cycle, have been crying about the Democrats wanting to Socialize America. Do my fellow citizens not get it? By drips and dribbles both parties have been moving us slowly down the path to socialism. The Democrats with government taking care of the personal things and the Republicans saving the world.
This morning Hank Paulson announced that 9 major banks would be required to let the U.S. Government take over part ownership. WHAT?!?!? Of course it is being done to save the world from an economic collapse. OK, I feel better - not.
This is an unprecedented unilateral move by the Federal Reserve.
There was a hue and cry when Venezuelas’ government, led by Hugo Chavez, took over (i.e. nationalize) their oil industry and yet we sit here and let our government (which supposedly loves and supports the free market) taking another step toward controlling our lives by starting to take over the financial system. This is done, of course, in the name of saving the world.
If you stake small steps every couple of years people don’t notice and will adapt. Rapid change breeds resentment and revolts (sometimes called civil wars.) You also need to up the urgency slowly with occasional spikes in great urgency just to push a little further a little faster. That also allows them to back off a little bit and say "see? we stopped this (or fixed it) and now everything is ok." The precedent doesn't go away and a new bar is set.
When more money is put into the economy that has a relatively fixed amount of goods and services the cost of those goods and services seems to increase. What really happens is that the money used to pay for those goods and services becomes worth less. With $800Billion being pumped into the economy the American Dollar is set to take another dive in its value. This means that what it costs to live will go up.
This is inflation (2-3% per year is what the Federal Reserve wants to keep it at.) This means that the American Dollar loses about 2-3% of its’ value every year. Which means it takes 2-3% more money every year to buy goods and services.
History has shown that a truly free market economy will always sort itself out - without intervention other than maintaining the value of the currency. The only reason to play with the money supply is to consolidate economic power in the hands of a few and not in the hands of the many represented by elected officials. This is what the Republicans want.
The Democrats to want socialize America by turning government into a Big Brother that will take care of us - through health care and other proposals that they have. This can only be accomplished by increasing taxes or by increasing the money supply.
In any case our rights are being whittled away ever so slowly and led blindly down the road to socialism. The only way we can stop this is either by holding another Constitutional Convention - which is, by the way, one of our rights given to us by the Declaration of Independence (a seemingly forgotten document), revolution (may or may not be a good idea) or by breaking the stranglehold that these two parties have on our country by voting for third parties.
